“Even in the desert. Even in the dry. Even in the wilderness. He is.”
This morning I am touching down at my favorite coffee shop in Kalispell, Colter Coffee. This place is almost like a second home to me. I literally visit this place on the daily. The staff are super friendly, they know my name. Some of them are artists, musicians, writers, producers, adventures and honestly, they just radiate good and positive vibes. It’s like an oasis of some sort. Which is quite rad and brings me to my next point.
Coming from the city, I do sometimes find myself missing the hustle & bustle, the busy streets and the night lights. Even the rushing police vehicles, the neighbor’s loud music and the curious scents. This place - my new home, has somewhat felt like desert. A beautiful desert, but desert nonetheless. (Strike one: comparison)
My new home is safe, with beautiful wide-open spaces and luscious green grounds. But the festive and creative culture is slow, lacking or hidden at best. (Strike two: fear of the unfamiliar)
Last year I sought the Lord and asked Him to show me new vision, to plug me in amongst the unknown. Open my eyes, Lord. Is the promise of my dreams and this new land an illusion? Or am I disillusioned by what seemed to be the “desert”?
He certainly didn’t fail. Slowly but surely my curiosity grew about the folks and culture in Montana and my heart started opening up. And it was in that dry season, that I found treasures. Like the writer, the graphic designer, the artist, the photographer, the fitness instructor, the programmer, the atmosphere shifter and the all musos. This place is laced with creativity. How rad!
So, in what felt like the desert, an oasis bloomed right in front of me. Jesus, forever faithful, opening my eyes to that which was right in front of me. Keep on asking. Keep on seeking. Ask and seek until you’ve lost count, and you shall see and receive. He is ridiculously faithful and will always stand by His word to fulfill it. Even in what appears to be a dry and desert season of your life.
Here is what I learned:
- Comparison robs you from experiencing the HERE AND NOW.
- The new normal can be just as powerful as the old normal.
- Even in the desert, He is.
- Dry isn’t dry when you cultivate the drinking well from within.
- He is the God of every season.
- Treasures are all around, but you have to straighten your slump and look up to see them.
